Sonic Transmissions Festival are proud to present a very heavy evening of jazz and improv for our third show of 2018! This show will feature a line up that features artists at the forefront of the avant-garde scenes in Chicago, LA and New York. Guitarist Jeff Parker (Tortoise, Isotope 217, Chicago Underground Quartet, etc.) will present his band The New Breed which on this occasion will feature Josh Johnson on alto saxophone and keys, Paul Bryan on bass and (fellow International Anthem Records associate) Makaya McCraven on drums. The New Breed is a project deeply embedded in Parker’s personal life and obsessions, in which he explores his own take on sampling, beat experimentation, electronic music and modern composition. Opening the show will be (yet another) International Anthem Records artist, trumpeter Jaimie Branch, who will lead her ensemble, Fly or Die – with Lester St Louis on cello, bassist Anton Hatwich, and drummer Chad Taylor. Known for “sucker punching” audiences right from the start, the band constitutes one of the freshest takes on modern jazz and improv. Jaimie Branch’s “Fly or Die” was named The Wire’s 9th best record of 2017 and was described as a “glorious collection of ghostly melodies and skittering grooves” and “one of the year’s finest jazz releases.” And to top it all off we have the one and only King Coffey (Butthole Surfers) dJing disco and dance music throughout the evening.
